Ummmmmm Save The Reef? (Up.)

Grow a brain?
I am waiting for more people to get into a panic about this save the environment/save the planet notion thats finally captured my attention. Amazing it doesn’t bother more people yet. When I was on one of my reef tours at GBR Heron Island, they taught us that the worlds reefs provide us with more oxygen than the forests.. and that unless Australia does something drastic YESTERDAY, the magnificent Great Barrier Reef will be little more than happy holiday snaps somewhere within 60 years.. less even (UPDATE: 20 years.. someone reacted!) . At least its starting to hit the news..

Oh and disposable underwater cameras don’t work so great (when I use them at least!), but here’s a few snippets.

  1. Now who’s that swimming there at the end.. ;p

Interesting post to think about! I honestly did not know that reefs played such a vital role in our oxygen supply, that certainly promotes their survival to a high priority!

Overall though, I am hopeful about the whole affair. I believe it is a matter of time before more people are thinking about these issues in general; the support of Earth hour last week was definitely a good sign that people are hearing, and willing to help in some places.

More events that unite large communities as a whole in a productive way to contribute to the longevity of the planet is a surefire way to educating them on what we’ll lose if we do not act. Sure, 99% of the participants might not be policy makers, but they are the ones who vote them in :)

  2. I dunno that I consider 65000 homes for one hour supported the cause… always room for more

  3. I agree 100% that something needs to be done. Whether our government likes it or not, we need to change our ways, even if it is because coal is running out.

Nuclear is not the way to go, because it will have other effects on the environment. Is the government really thinking about this, or do they just want a thing to do. If the government of our country does start building neclear powerplants, I will be very dissapointed that Australia isnt going to be leading the world in efficient ways of creating power.

Australia may be small, but we can make a difference. Car companies should take the lead, and stop making petrol cars. The technology is there, but they are all reluctant to change…

Something needs to be done. Lets overthrow the government… (JOKE!)

  4. You forget that anyone with the power to change anything is more concerned about their own money. Then there are those pesky shareholders which are so important to companies that all their excess money MUST go to them.

  5. How was that Shell-Ferrari commercial that refused to donate $50000 to sophie delizio’s charity in return for filming an ad on the harbour bridge! gah

  6. I know this may make me sound like some uncaring, no hearted bastard, but there is a difference between putting profits aside for the good of mankind, and putting money towards a single person who got unlucky… twice. I may even go as far as saying a charity for a small minority of the recognised population.
Yes, I’ve been influenced by one or two sci-fi shows here and there where the need for bettering ourselves as a while rises above the need for personal gain. However, factors have been explored in other fictional societies where weaker individuals are sacrificed for the good of all. I can run off a handful of examples, but that is for another rant.

  7. her -charity- not her, luckily her family recognised that the amount of public support for sophie could raise money to help a lot of kids out - the charity is A Day Of Difference i think its called, and supports all burns victims and has bought most major hospitals the top medical equiptment for burns victims. :) i think shell-ferrari would barely notice that much more spent on the most expensive ad to ever be made, and disagreed on the principle of making a donation when they could go wherever else for free.

  8. Sure 65000 homes supporting the cause, whether 1 hour or 1 minute, is supporting the cause — in all senses, it reflects people being willing to chip in, in a way they can conceptualise and identify with. I think in most cases, discussing solutions to this problem on an individual level is relegated to abstract problems, or things we can’t well control.

Case in point, Daniel raised the issue of car companies and the petrol based car. A large issue, one that could have been addressed 20 years ago, but due to the patent-wielding oil companies, goes no further. I guess it is only once stores of fossil fuels are even more depleted, will the neccessity of using those patents and introducing more hybrid (already on the marketplace, but expensive) and fully non-fuel-powered cars begin to grow in prominence.

A practical solution, which to all intents and purposes, we can’t really do anything about except talk about.
